This paper is to investigate how the Huguenots Colleges were established in France which was a Catholic country, how it was expanded and how it influenced. For this, the author first examined that the educational thoughts of Luther and Calvin were spreaded into France and the Protestants' ideas of education became germinated. The author also investigated the establishment of the Huguenots Colleges in France, their educational thoughts and how it had been expanded to 35 Colleges in the 19 regions.
Born in France, Calvin was influenced by Luther, but he developed his own tenets. While he sought refuge in Switzerland, he formed his educational ideas and established the University of Geneva, which became the model for establishing the Huguenots Colleges. His idea of 'Church education through home' and 'Church education through school' was realized in this Huguenots Colleges. Therefore, Huguenots Colleges had greatly contributed to the expansion of educational space and the reformation of education in France as well as to the cultivation of the Protestant leaders.
The establishment of Huguenots Colleges, however, was continued only for 70 years for several reasons despite of their great enthusiasm and results. First, the Theology of the University of Paris and the French monarchy oppressed protestantism. Second, reformed Catholic churches such as Jesuits and Oratorian established Colleges, and made favorable impression on the students and their parents related to their curriculum and school management.
Against this backdrop, the Huguenots deported from France started to establish schools in the countries where protestantism came out predominant, and then led their religious life and education. As buddhism was more prosperous in China and Thailand than India, so the educational ideas of the Huguenots were more transplanted to the other civilized countries like England and the Netherlands. As a result, these ideas inculcated people who established the civic state with the ideas including changes and innovation, democratic spirit and capitalism through education.
