The purpose of this study is to investigate architectural characters of the national exhibitions in modern Korea. National exhibition is not spontaneous in Korea, but from the abroad; therefore, this study is focused on the consideration of it through comparing with Japanese national exhibition at the same time.
The exhibition site was the epitome of Choseon under the Japanese rule. The architectures at the "Chosen Industrial Exhibition(9151)" were divided in two styles: the euphemistically mixed style of Renaissance and Secession and the Korean traditional style. The main pavilions were designed with the new style, and the scale of them overwhelmed the existed traditional ones. We can read the relationship between the empire and colony through the confrontation and the discrepancy of these two styles.
Gyeong Bok Palace, which is the main palace of Choseon Dynasty in Seoul, was selected as the site of the exhibition. It is similar to that the Ueno Park, the symbolic place of the Tokugawa shogunate, was often selected as the site of exhibitions. Namely, by opening the national exhibitions at the symbolic place of the pre-modern times, they enthusiastically intended to declare to open the new epoch.
