When the Pulitzer board announced the 2003 recipient of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, the American media highlighted the fact that the dramatist Nilo Cruz was the first Latin American playwright to win the award. His play Anna in the Tropics was a surprise winner because neither the five Pulitzer judges, including one scholar and four theatre critics, nor any members of the ruling Pulitzer board had seen the production of the play. Their decision was solely based on the dramatic text.
Anna in the Tropics tells the story of the Santiago family, cigar factory workers, in Ybor City, Tampa, Florida, whose lives are transformed by the power of literature read by a lector. In crafting his tale about the power of art, love, sexuality, family, and tradition, Cruz refers to the Leo Tolstoy's novel Anna Karenina in thematic content as well as in plot and characterization. The attention-grabbing title has a contrasting effect; it opposes the snowy winter of Russia with tropical climate of Tampa, Florida. The difference between Tolstoy's novel and Cruz's drama is not just geographical, but also social and cultural. Cruz is quite successful documenting the contrasting elements of the novel within his play, balancing the philosophical weight of the Russian novel with plenty of light-hearted comedy. By borrowing from the Tolstoy's literary power, Cruz is able to smooth over many of the play's rougher edges. Even so, one can not help but wish Cruz had come up with a slightly more surprising or original way of dealing with the Cuban immigrants' unique history. Much of the drama's contrasting aesthetics relies heavily on the stereotypical dichotomy between men versus women, the older generation versus the younger, and tradition versus modernity.
The play's reference to Tolstoy's Anna Karenina attests to the power of literature to enrich our lives, and Cruz declares its universal appeal to humanity throughout the play. However, despite its many virtues, Cruz's dramatic strategies are nothing we have not seen before. The predictable storyline and stereotypical characterization, and especially the deja-vu dichotomy between tradition and modernity lead us to question the formulaic aesthetic standard of the Pulitzer Prize voting committee and their view of the ethnic minority theatres.
