It is widely recognized that a region’s age structure is closely related to its industrial structure. However, the literature shows that no efforts have been made to measure the degree of the relationship between them. This paper attempts to gauge it with a simple technique of ‘pattern correlation analysis’ which is newly developed. The Korean economy is divided into 28 life sphere zones for the application of the technique. The result illustrates the close relationship between the region’s age structure and its industrial structure, specifically indicating the pattern correlation coefficient of -0.71. This result appeals the usefulness of the pattern correlation analysis technique. The technique presented in this paper represents the first step toward a more general and complicated analysis of the regional structure. Further research based on this is expected.
