The purpose of this study is to identify the operational characteristics of 4-legs unsignalized intersection in new-town of which the residential areas are usually operated by Pedestrian-Crossing signs instead of STOP signs. The total travel time (TTT) of each direction and each movement is analyzed to Identify the operational type of unsignalized intersection between Two-Way Stop Controlled Intersection (TWSCI) and Multi-Way Stop Controlled Intersection (MWSCI).
The analysis of cumulative distribution of TTT, the analysis of accident, and the sensitivity analysis using regression method were conducted to determine the operational type of intersection.
The study found that 4-legs unsignalized intersections in the residential areas of new-town have a form of MWSCI, but operated as that of TWSCI. It causes the drivers, especially of the minor stream, get confused to cross the confliting area. Therefore, it is recommended to have a proper operational type based on the split of volumes, so that drivers can avoid highly possible accidents.
