The Intent of this study is to make clear the natures of the new town of Chisan and P?mmul districts which were planned and constructed outside the built-up area south of Taegu and have the number of 23,780 households and the population of 86, 089 as of 1992. The research data include documents, questionaires and on-the-spot investigation. Main observations can be summed up as follows.
First, because residential areas and public and neighborhood facilities have been laid out well and harmoniously, life in the new town is convenient. But the congestion of population, the absence of a playfield, the lack of cultural facilities do not meet the need of an ideal new town
Second, considered the flow of residents, 58% of the residents have immigrated from other areas of Taegu. 77.1% of the householders have thier places of work in the urban area of Taegu. 88-63% of selectively purchased commodities and valuable articles of the residents are bought in the urban area. In sum, the ratio of self-sufficiency in the new town is very low.
In the formation of the residents, 70% of the householders are consisted of singles and young couples under the age of the thirties. 51.4% of them are the higher educated people who graduated from junior colleges or above. Many of them belong to white-collar workers who are public service workers and school teachers(18.7%), managers and clerical workers(11.7%), and bank clerks and company employees(10.5%). Except the middle income earners(44.4%), this phenomena show the very nature of a new town
Third, 42.7% of the dwelling houses are low-class rented ones and compared with their prior houses, 46.9% of the households possess similar or even inferior ones. Accordingly, the new town can not be seen as a homogeneous area with middle-class houses. Because 60.1% of the residents consider the dwelling environment of the new area good, however, a majority of the people seem to feel satisfieded with their life in the new town.
