This study reviewed the consciousness of municipal officials on the townscape policy. The trends of the consciousness by questionnaires were analyzed. The analysis used X² significance test method.
The principal results were as follows;
1. In the total group, natural environment with green is the most preferred residential area. Female and young people have a stronger tendency to live in the town has modern buildings than male and old people.
2. Males have a higher interest on townscape and beauty of the town than females. The older and the higher official's status are, the higher their interest on townscape is. The cities with more than 200,000 population have the highest interest.
3. In the evaluation of the present residential city, about 50% of the total group has the good impression and others have the bad impression. People who live in smaller cities tends to have a good impression on their own cities.
4. 56% of the total group wants that the administrative policy positively considers the townscape.
5. The reservation of the natural environment was considered as the most important factor for the formation of the townscape.
6. It is considered desirable that the administrative policy provides only a basic guide.
7. The landscape plans to limit the private property are not preferred.
