The purpose of this study is to analyze local and global networks of high tech industries in Korea. Interview and questionnaire surveys have been conducted in the Capital Region and Kumi city in order to find major sources for the formation of local and global networks in the major areas of high tech industrial agglomeration in Korea.
In general, cooperation between large firms and small/medium firms; the appearance of spin-offs; cooperation and collaboration among local firms of suppliers, customers, and competitors; and cooperation with local trade associations, local universities, and local government are the major forces for intensifying local networks and embeddedness and, then, for the dynamics of the high tech industrial districts in Korea.
There has been an increasing trend of global networks in production, research and development, and marketing in Korea in recent years. Strategic alliances, direct foreign investments, subcontracting out production beyond the national boundary, and cooperation with foreign suppliers and customers are the major sources for the increase in global networks.
Firms in the high tech industrial districts in Korea are now under restructuring with intensifying local and global networks. Supports for the cooperation between large and small firms. provision of local innovative culture or technological infrastructure, supports of spin-offs and new start-ups, and formation of innovation networks are required in order to maintain or remaking competitive advantages of the new industrial districts in Korea.
