The purpose of this thesis is to find out the basic reasons why the Italian urban plazas become such a successful living space for the everyday life. To pursue this aim four plazas in the city of Rome have been chosen to be analyzed.
The first item to be studied was the dimension and shape of the plazas to contain the comfortable activities of the inhabitants. It is followed by the analysis of height/width ratio of the plaza section to find out the ideal rate of enclosure. The next step is the study of usage of the surrounding buildings. The common type was commercial-residential complex which has stores on the ground floor and apartments above. It is found that this type of building contributes greatly to the vitality of plaza by providing mutual tie between the people and commercial activities. Also public building such as church is recommended but government and office building are not. After analyzing all the activities happening in plazas the following conclusion has been drawn. First, the dimension of the plazas stay between 8,OOO㎡ and 600㎡ and the longest side should not exceed 140m. Second, height/width ratio should remain between 1/1 and 1/3. Third, the usage of the surrounding buildings is recommended to be commercial-residential mixture combined with religion and culture types. Also all the stores should stay open until late hour to create vitality and nightscape to the plazas. Lastly such programs as vegetable market, outdoor concert, charity bazaar, street campaign and sport game should be provided by city administrators to give more attraction to the plazas that act as the outdoor livingroom to the urban dwellers.
