The purpose of this study is to investigate the growth and decline pattern of Korean cities. The population growth and decline tendency of the cities are analyzed to carry out this study. The number of cities that is researched into is 119 and the duration of this study is 30 years (1965~1995). This study is significant in the point that it can make an offer foundation data to the study which investigates the growth and decline factors of the cities. The results of this study are as follows: First, the number of the cities whose population is at least 100,000 and the cities whose population is less than 20,000 is increasing. Secondly, The cities whose population is at least 100,0000 show the tendency of population growth. On the other hand, the cities less than 100,000 possess the characteristics of population decline or paralysis. Thirdly, the capital area shows remarkable increase in population but Jeonra province area shows population decline or paralysis. Fourthly, the growth of manufacturing industry does not affect population growth so much. These results make a few suggestions, and those are as follows: First, it's necessary to make a model which the optimum population of a city and the result of population growth and decline can be forecasted through. Secondly, it is needful to make concrete researches into over-urbanization and pseudo-urbanization taking place in Korea.
