Many previous studies, which related to travelers' route choice behavior, mostly focused on only finding important factors which affect on route choice behavior, and they focused on ordering the factors according to the importance in affecting route choice decision by survey. For more general application, this study suggests a method of calibrating logit-type route choice behavioral model that can explain and forecast drivers' route choice in addition to defining important factors and measuring their relative importance in quantitative way. Therefore, the results of calibrating the route choice behavioral model can show us what are the independent variables (important factors) that are statistically significant. And the results can also give us the value of parameters for each independent variable, which can be interpreted as the relative importance between variables. Especially, this study suggests a survey method that can get more specific and accurate attribute data of each route by tracing the route link by link on highway network. This study recommends to use revealed preference (RP) data, which is the quantified attributes of route that a traveler actually chooses. In addition to the suggestion of survey method and calibrating method, this study also interprets all components in the route choice behavioral model with ATIS system. The components of the model include scale parameter, random variable and parameters of each independent variable in utility function of the legit model. In this way, this study shows that the model can reflect the different route choice behavior among multi-class travelers. And it also shows that the model can also explain the variation in route choice behavior depending on the level of accuracy for route information which a traveler can get in ATIS system.
