The purpose of this study is to compare the present regulation concerning BOD level and their enforcement of residential sewer system, and to bring up the seriousness of the problem. The residential sewer system is composed of domestic sewer system, which is discharged without treatment, and nightsoil waste water system, which is injected into a septic tank.
The regualtion specifies the BOD density in discharged sewage water to be less than 60 ppm or 90 ppm and septic tank volume depending upon the number of population. The septic tank should reduce the BOD level more than 60% compared to injected and discharged sewage, and the sludge should be cleaned at least once a year.
Observation, however, reveals that the domestic sewerage has 123 ppm in BOD density and discharged nightsoil waste water has over 360ppm, resulting the overall discharged residental waste water containing over 230 ppm. The septic tank is only 9.8% to 24.5% effective for reduction and the sludge has not been cleaned since it is built.
Based on the analysis, it appears that regulations concerning with the amount of BOD load would be more effective than the presently regulated BOD density. Although the result can not claim over the whole sewer system in Seoul, because the observations are limited to only two apartment sites, the problem appears serious enough to call attention for further study.
