The elements of the adjacent space to a dwellingunit of 5 story apartment house are balcony and staircase as threshold area between inside and outside of the dwellingunit, the front door area of the house and access way to the house and lawn covered area between the houses as collective usable space.
The adjacent space to a dwellingunit is necessary for the approach to the dwellingunit and to secure sunshine, ventilation and privacy of the dwellingunit.
Besides the adjacent space to a dwellingunit is directly or easily accessible from the dwellingunit and there may happen many daily living related activities.
In the design of residential districts, planners would pay little attention to the adjacent space to a dwellingunit simply saying that the space is tor the common use. The common use in this context means no special use.
This study analyzes the physical condition and the behavior of the dwellers in the adjacent space to a dwellingunit in a residential district with 5 story apartment houses in seoul.
The results of the investigation are as follows ;
1. Many householdstuffs are kept in the threshold area. For this reason the balcony can not be used as a mediator between inside and outside of a dwellingunit. The staircase may be dangerous at an emergency.
2. The front door area of the house is used by both small children and housewives as a play area and a meeting place. It buillds a clear defined domain.
3. The access way to the house and the lawn covered area between the houses is the place, where the children play of the front door area expands. By housewives this area is used for childcare and the hangout of laundry. This activity is close related to the activity in the front door area of the house.
