This article investigates the nesting configurations of the market areas of central places in the context of multi-industry location model. Although many types of nesting configurations of central places including k＝3 system, k＝4 system, and other variable nesting systems have been suggested, appropriate economic explanations for the nesting configurations have not been provided. Thus, there has been ongoing debate regarding economic rationale as well as the property of the nesting configurations, particularly with regard to the k＝3 system. Based on the multi-industry location model, this article analyzes the structure of the nesting configurations of the market areas in the central place system and suggests an alternative dynamic model. Also, this article suggests an alternative explanation for the k＝3 system which criticizes Christaller’s explanation that all parts of the region in the system are supplied with all conceivable central goods from the minimum possible number of functioning central places. On the contrary, this article argues that the k＝3 system may supply central goods from maximum possible number of central places.
