This Paper is researched on the planting design for the traditional trees focused on the mural paintings of Koguryo's ancient tombs. Most of Koguryo's ancient tombs are spread out in Pyung-yang, Jip-an(China) and Jolbonsung, the capital of Koguryo which are in China at present. The conspicuous figures of the ancient tombs are made various mural paintings. There are nearly eighty Koguryo's ancient tombs with mural paintings. Many trees with various shapes and functions are drawn in the mural paintings of Koguryo's ancient tombs which were built by Koguryo people during the period from 4th century to 7th century. It is meaningful work to compare the mural paintings of Koguryo's ancient tombs with historical writings during that period and to discern the difference and commonness between them. The things depicted in the mural paintings of Koguryo's ancient tombs are classified into three ; human figure-custom, human figure-custom with four divine animals(西方神) and four divine animals which are figured to three stages. The positions of various trees in the mural paintings are changed through the three stages as well as the function of the trees. A tall tree(喬木) communicates with the heaven to be related with governing and managing every aspect of human life and is the object of praying, which have something in common with the tree on the altar in Writings of Dan-gun(檀君記) in the Heritage of the Three states(三國遺事). In this reason, a tall tree is symbolized as an object which is the tree of the faith with the religious character. Shrubs(灌木) are very useful for human life. A mulberry(桑) and a paper mulberry tree(楮) is especially provide almost all necessities for the human. Planting types in the mural paintings are grouped called forest, lineal tree, paired tree(symmetrical type and bilateral type) and single tree (specimen tree). Grouping trees are depicted in a forest(林) and an edging trees(藪) and pine trees planted around a artificial pond(穿池造山) in the painting, which is found in many pages of the Chronicles of the Three states(三國史記). Symmetrical trees are depicted in the right and left side of the entrance of the black chamber(玄室) or both side of the dead figures in the black chamber(玄室) of the tomb. The entranceway or the black chamber (玄室) is posited on the central axis of the tomb and trees are depicted in the both side of the black chamber into symmetrical structure. Single tree in the painting is posited in the top of the mountain and 'place' of the human life and is classified into a divine tree(神木) and a shady tree(亮子木). The tall trees or shrubs in the painting have function of dividing the frame of painting, which is identified in the historical writings of the Chronicles of the Three states(三國史記), the Heritage of the Three states(三國遺事), etc.
