Two types of formulations of Trichoderma harzianum (TH1) and Pseudomonas cepacia (LH3) antagonistic to Phytophthora capsici were examined for their effects on the suppression of phytophthora blight of red-pepper in three commercial fields in 1988 to 1989. The efficacy of antagonists in the suppression of red-pepper blight was better in the treatment of direct-incorporation of the antagonists into seedbed soil than that of surface application of antagonist's granules at all tested fields. Of two antagonists, LH3 performed better for disease suppression. Final disease severity in the plots treated with the antagonist-incorporated seedbed soil was 29.8% and 40% at Euisung and Jungwon, respectively. This was significantly lower than those of the plots received regular fungicide applications with 42.1% and 56%. Suppression effects of TH1, however, varied greatly with fields. Population density of TH1 in soil decreased rapidly after application, regardless of type of formulations, but the rate of reduction was a little slower with the antagonist's granules. Red-pepper yields tended to increase in all plots treated with antagonists, particularly with TH1 although the differences were not significant.
