This study inquires the correlation between Christian education and faith community through the critical reflection of Lewis Sherrill's concept of faith community. Sherrill is a Christian education theorist who takes 'relation' highly serious in his philosophy of Christian education. Sherrill names his concept of faith community "koinonia".
Sherrill's concept of faith community, koinonia, includes Christian families, schools, and churches. Among various faith communities Sherrill lays a great emphasis on the church. Christian church is a place where Christian education is performed in a continuous and consistent manner by professionally trained staffs. In this church parents and children are to be taught concerning Christian way of life. The characteristics and atmosphere of the church, then, are to be greatly important factors for Christian education since they constitute the "informal education" and "implicit curriculum". In this sense Sherrill's understanding of the church as koinonia has significant implications for the enhancement of the quality of Christian education of the church. In this vein, this study delves into the critical reflection of Sherrill's concept of koinonia as a community of faith.
In order to understand Sherrill's concept of koinonia this study sets up the following sub-chapters: initiative of the relationship in koinonia, characteristics of koinonia, communication style in koinonia, and correlation between koinonia and Christian education. Once delineating Sherrill's concept of koinonia under the sub-chapters mentioned above, this inquiry attempts critical reflection upon koinonia. First, salient features of koinonia as an educational concept of the church are investigated. Second, limitation and deficit of koinonia are dealt with. Sherrill's concept of koinonia opens up the possibility of being a powerful concept providing a significant reality which encompasses individuality and communality of members of Christian church. In fact, Sherrill's concept of koinonia is an excellent forerunner of Robert Kegan's description of the highest status of personal development such as "inter-subjectivity". The most grievous deficit of Sherrill's concept of koinonia is, however, the fact that it does not have an appropriate ontological foundation upon which it can be grounded. Sherrill admits that God is the foundation of koinonia. But he falls short of providing an appropriate explication of the nature of God as Trinity who maintains individuality and communality in Godself. This deficit can be complemented and corrected through critical employment of Jurgen Moltmann's "open Trinity", "social Trinity", "perichoretic Trinity", etc.
