Ichon has had a reputation for its rice production from ancient times. It ,therefore, has abundant folk song materials. Besides "Rice Planting Song(모내기노래)" and "Rice Field Weeding Song(논매기노래)", lots of materials which could not be found in other areas have been collected. This is the reason why the khan Labor Songs attract attention.
The planting songs of khan area are divided into two types. The one is "Here is One and There is Another One(여기도 하나 저기도 또 하나)." the other is "Planted and Stuck(심었네 꽃었네)." These songs are generally based on the prayer for good harvest and on the loyalty and filial piety. Additionally these songs express the pride of Ichon Rice.
The Rice Field Weeding Songs are sung differently at the first weeding, the second weeding and the third weeding. This is to change the mood and rhythm of songs in accordance with the conditions of the work. These songs have close relations with those collected from the neighbor areas like Yeojoo, Ahnsung and Yongin. Materials related with dry field farming are rather scanty. Dry Field Plowing Songs are not different greatly from those of Rice Fields. Cattle driving songs like "Iyeo Uyeo Udiyeo Udiyeo(이여 어여 어디여 어디여)" form the base and the surrounding conditions and the farmer's mind are manifested additionally. The aspects of dry field weeding songs change depending on the number of the workers on the field. When several people work together, the song is divided into two parts. When the work is done alone, grief songs and love songs make up the main part.
The main constituents of Chigedongbal, a Lumbering-song(벌채노동요) are lamentations and self-consolation. The tune of Arirang-taryung underlies the story of the song. If it was sung under different conditions, it would be better to be classified as a farewell-song, love-song and lamentation-song, Among Shindun-myun materials are those that are performed like the word-joining-game, which is conspicuous.
The Ground-hardening Song(땅다지기노래) has distinctive features of ritual element of tutelary deity and labor songs accompanying manual labor. On this account, this song is used together with the story of Ramming-song, which is classified as a Conscious-song. The Ground-hardening Song is generally composed of three parts: the source and history of the propitious grave site, the choice and the prayer. However, the recently collected materials actually amount to only a part of them The reason for it is that the style of the ground-hardening song had already changed long time ago.
The style of the Labor-Song of Ichon area is also like that of other songs and does not make any difference from other areas in terms of the form like the style of songs and rhythm The distinctive features in the characteristics of form can be seen in the refrain.
This paper deals with a part of the labor song and attempts to highlight some distinctive features by comparing them with those of Yeojoo, Alnsung, and Yongin of the Southeastern Kyounggi Province. The ultimate purpose of this study is to group these areas into one cultural boundary and look at them from the various perspectives. The point of this study will be verified by advancing the comparative study of the consciousness-song and analyzing the folk faith, the legend and the origin of the geographical designations.
