Cheju Island si called the Island of three “Abundances” because it has much wind, many women, and much stone. Because of her being full of stones, there are many folk songs about stone on the Island.
For example, stones on a mountain peak are often likened to one's. legal modest wife. When in love with a second wife, the husband doesn’t love his first wife, but she lives carefully and silently with him as stones. on a mountain peak, for she believes she will be able to live in happiness. again with him some day.
Other examples are songs about a boy who pulled some of his teeth and an embankment of stones around a grave in a song of women divers.
Stones have many different meanings to the people of Cheju. Flat stones used for help in getting off a saddle or taking stuff off one’s back are called “Phang” in Cheju Island. If it is not settled on the earth, it’s called “Kyung Kun Phang” which symbolizes the misfortune of the concerned. Also the pain of married life in the home of the husband’s parents is often likened to the A-frame used for carrying stones on one’s back.
Generally speaking, stones in Cheju folk songs are often likened to stability, silence, deafness, firmness, and blindness, The people in the Island who have learned this philosophy of the stone have lived carefully and silently as stones.
