The goal of the paper is to seek a comprehensive consensus against the general and traditional consensus of scholarly opinion about Jewish missionary activity which is that Judaism was, in varying degrees, undoubtedly a missionary religion. There are many evidences that Judaism was a very attractive religion in terms of ethical behavior, as well as, had a positive attitude toward proselytes and proselytism. However, this does not due to the missionary activities. Although there may have been a few evangelists scattered throughout Jewish history, and although Jewish missionary activity may have existed at times in Rome, there is no evidence that could lead to the conclusion that Judaism was a missionary religion in the sense of aggressive attempts to convert Gentiles or in the sense of selfidentity. However, this does not mean that Judaism was characterized by a general isolation or an esotericism, except in marginal cases. Jewish missionary activity in the second temple period was not common phenomenon, even though there are some scattered evidences throughout Jewish history. But here, we have to admit that the pattern of Jewish religion at the time appears totally different. The evidence of the written documents does not show the whole pattern of the Jewish religion. We have to think that there was considerable diversity within Judaism.
