The purpose of this study was to examine the costume of heroes and heroines of a comic that was used to highlight their character, and to delve into the symbolicity of their costume and its impact on fashion. The comic book selected in this study was Nana, one of the most popular comics in Japan. The author named Yazawa Ai character of this book were fanatic for Vivienne Westwood.
In order to discuss the influence of images in popular culture on fashion, theories about modern mass culture and the concept and characteristics of comic were reviewed, and how multiple images that appeared in the comic functioned as visual signs in impacting on fashion as a vehicle of communication and as one of the genres of the popular visual arts. Besides, whether the comic had a real impact on fashion and what sort of symbolicity the images of the comic had in association with clothing were explored.
An experimental study was conducted to analyze the content of the selected Japanese comic and the characters of the heroes and heroines. As a result, four different styles of fashion appeared in it: rocker style, punk look, school look and funny look. Given this finding, the images of popular culture seemed to have four different types of symbolicity in relation to fashion, which included imitative nature, popularity and fusion.
