This paper is concerned with science culture developed in the period of early Modern Japan before and after the Meiji Restoration in 1868, during which Japan took its shape as Modern Japan and accepted western culture, science and technologies. The period examined here ranges from 1543 when the first Westerner landed at Danegasima Island accidently, to the early 1990s when imperialism began to prevail in Japan. This study was first looked at the process in which Japan contacted western culture and science and accepted and Japanized them in that period of time. It considers how new scientific terms including “kagaku”, which was coined by Japanese scholars to mean ‘science’, were defined and settled in philosophical journals. Then, the characteristics of a new science culture, and the reasons for its success or failure in the period of early Modern Japan are discussed. This study allows the researcher to investigate Japan’s unique imitation culture, its tendencies towards western sciences and technologies, and the ways that Japan coped with new science culture. It was found that Japan succeeded in establishing western culture and incorporating it into the science culture of Japan since the late period of Meiji. This does not mean that the science culture of Japan was westernized; rather it means that Japanese scholars had a profound understanding of western ways of thinking, value systems and science. By comparing their culture with western culture, Japanese scholars attempted to understand their own culture more deeply and accurately.
