Being shaped in the context of housing welfare, the purposes of this research study are to find out the housing policy for older adults in Hong Kong and also to examine the features of senior housing. The main methods adopted in the study include site visits in two public housing specially designed for older adults and in-depth interviews with professionals in the public sector including researchers, architects, on-site managers, and social workers in the area of senior housing in Hong Kong. As already stepping into an aging society in the Asia-Pacific region, Hong Kong has experienced the drastic demographic transformation, and the government has addressed an official issue and concern on welfare of older adults since 1970s. This study finds that the housing policy for older adults in Hong Kong lies in aging-in-place which can be described as living close to adult children and growing older in a familiar community. To enable older adults to continue to stay in their own home and community, a universal design approach is widely adopted in designing housing units, and also a wide array of supportive services at a community level are established and provided. Also, the results implies that as the number of older adults requiring institutional care is expected to increase, the policy on the issue and its relevant measures are specifically addressed.
