There have been many styles of classic Sijo concerning Confucianism. For example, the teaching of Confucian decorum Sijo, the Sijo concerning the study of Confucianism and the eulogistic Sijo. In this research paper, I focus on the eulogistic classic Sijo. The classic Sijo is a main literary genre which was created by the upper-class in the late Koryo dynasty, and which developed greatly during the Chosun dynasty. The authors of the classic Sijo liked to express their feelings concerning aspects of daily life, such as the eulogistic thinking in regard to the king and the common people. I look at the authors and the works of the eulogistic classic Sijo in order to explore the relationship between Sijo and eulogy.
First, I discuss the character of the authors in respect to their class and the time in which they lived. There have been several authors each century: two in the fifteenth century, six in the sixteenth, nineteen in the seventeenth, fifteen in the eighteenth, and ten in the nineteenth. The reason why the least authors appeared in the fifteenth century is that Sijo was not so popular at that time. In the seventeenth century many authors composed Sijo because the upper-class was very powerful in the society of that time. The experts in composing Sijo were also quite active in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
Both upper and middle-class authors composed the eulogistic classic Sijo: the upper-class from the fifteenth to the seventeenth century, and both upper and middle-class authors during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
Next, I focus on the character of the eulogistic classic Sijo. In respect to the poetic object, the monarch had been the only object of the eulogistic classic Sijo from the fifteenth to the sixteenth century. But in the seventeenth century, the common people started to appear as new objects of the eulogistic classic Sijo for the first time in classic Sijo history. So the monarch and the common people together played a role as poetic objects of the eulogistic classic Sijo. From the eighteenth to the nineteenth century, the common people appeared as objects of the eulogistic classic Sijo more so than the monarch did.
Finally, I focus on the purpose of the eulogy. From the fifteenth century to the sixteenth century the purpose of eulogizing the monarch was consistent with the original intention of the eulogy. But from the seventeenth century to the nineteenth century, the purpose of the eulogy on a superficial level differed from the original intention. During this time, in the case of eulogizing the common people the purposes of the eulogy varied according to the different characters of people, such as men in political power, Confucian scholars, sagacious people, filial people, etc.
