In the present study, we investigated whether the growth and flowering of chrysanthemum cv. ‘Daewhakang’ is related with the content of endogenous gibberellins (GAs) and abscisic acid (ABA) caused by cold treatment and cultivation temperature. When the plants were grown at 18℃, the flowering rate was 100% and the flowering period was uniform by 5 days regardless of the cold treatment. When they were grown at 12℃ without cold treatment, the flowering date was significantly delayed to April 24, and the flowering period was not uniform by 33 days. Cuttings subjected to cold treatment exhibited no flowering at all. It is concluded that the biosynthesis pathway of the GAs operated in the shoot tip of chrysanthemum was an early-13-hydroxylation pathway in which bioactive GA₁ was synthesized by the order of GA₁₂→ GA₄₄ → GA₁? → GA₂? → GA₁. The total GA content was markedly decreased while ABA content was increased after cold treatment for 30 days at 2℃. The total GA content was greatly increased after the 6-day period under shortday condition, and it was higher in the cold-treated plants and in the plants grown at 12℃ than in those untreated and grown at 18℃. On the other hand, the total GA content was remarkably decreased after the 29-day period compared with after the 6-day period, both under shortday condition, and it was the highest in non-efflorescence plants. ABA content was increased after the 6-day period under shortday condition and the untreated plants were higher by 1.5- and 2-fold compared with the cold-treated plants. However, there was no difference between the untreated and cold-treated plants after the 29- day period under shortday condition.
