One of the most representative characteristics of the novels written by Seo Yeong-eun is the display of "anti-ordinary," "immoral" and "anti-social" qualities. At the same time she is demonstrating those features out in the front, she is always emphasizing "innocence" and "life force" in the background. Thus it appears that the ultimate objective of her deviating and destructive "anti-social" qualities is to refuse and escape from the world of hypocrisy and barrenness.
She often uses animals to highlight innocence and life force that she seeks out. For her, nature, especially an animal has something to do with the realization of the nature of life. Taking the ongoing and repetitive images, her animals become the meaningful symbolism that affects the entire work in some cases and voice her critical viewpoints about the human life and reality in their personified figures in other cases.
In this study, two beast fable novels of hers were first reviewed to understand the author's perceptions of the reality. Then the animals, which include the camel, bird, and cat, appearing in her You're Far Away, Golden Feathers, The Triangular Sail, People from the Official Residence, and Come Back Home, Areum were examined to find the symbolic meanings.
