Experiments were conducted to determine the effects of the difference between day and night temperatures (DIF) on the growth and flowering of miniature potted roses (Rosa hybrida) 'Indian Meillandina', 'Colibri 79', 'Magic Carousel', 'Baby Masquerade', 'Yellow Meillandina', and 'Scarlet Meillandina' in environment-controlled growth chambers. Plants were treated with three DIFs (zero DIF, 21.5/21.5℃; positive DIF, 25/18℃; and negative DIF, 18/25℃ day/night temperature), each with a daily average temperature of 21.5℃. Photosynthetic photon flux of 180 μ㏖ㆍm?²s?¹ was provided by cool-white fluorescent lamps with 12 h photoperiod. For all treatments, CO₂ was supplied at 1,000 μ㏖ㆍm?²s?¹ during the day and relative humidity was maintained at 80 ± 5%. Plant height and internode length were strongly influenced by DIF treatments. Final plant height in all cultivars was 5~8 ㎝ shorter in negative DIF than positive and zero DIF regimes. Mean number of nodes per a flowering stem was not affected by DIF treatments. In all cultivars, leaves became more upright when DIF decreased from positive to negative, and chlorophyll content also increased linearly with increasing DIP. Days to flowering increased as DIF decreased except in 'Indian Meillandina', which showed an opposite trend, and in 'Colibri 79', which was not affected by DIF. Dry weights and shoot/root ratio decreased with decreasing DIF. It is concluded that negative DIF induced to reduction in plant height and length of internodes, but even these plants were marketable.
