Coir dust (coir) is considered as an alternative to peat, rockwool, and other materials for various transplant productions. The purpose of this study was to investigate the use of coir-based container media, coir alone, and mixtures of coir and perlite at 3:1, 2:1, and 1:1 ratios, for gerbera growth with emphasis placed on the water holding characteristics of the media. Physical properties and water holding characteristics of the media were measured, and effect of irrigation intervals on the growth of gerbera in the media was investigated. Coir had greater bulk density but had much greater total pore space than perlite and the mixtures of coir and perlite. However, air-filled porosity of the media at water level of water holding capacity was not significantly different. Coir had six times higher water holding capacity as compared to perlite. And as the content of perlite increased in the coir-based mixtures, the water holding capacity considerably declined. Coir-based mixtures performed better in gerbera growth, especially in root growth, than rockwool. Physical characteristics, especially porosity, of coir-based mixtures would be the main reason for better growth of roots. Considering the overall growth characteristics of gerbera, the 2:1 mixture of coir and perlite performed better than the other mixtures under one irrigation every day. And with the irrigation intervals of every 3 and 6 days, the 3:1 mixture of coir and perlite and coir alone were the best, respectively. These results could be due to the water holding characteristics of those mixtures.
