This research explores the historical notion of architectural typology, which is regarded as a core design fundamental to format an architectural form since the 18th century. Through out ages, various theorists accentuate that the modification of preconceived building shapes are unconsciously involved in the architectural design process.
Despite its long history as a theory, however, the core essence of the concept differed from time to time due to unique cultural phenomena and social reality of each dedicated era. In other words, the interest in architectural typology transformed by society, place and time and thereby, its position as an architectural theory remained unstable.
Therefore, it will be valuable to trace back the variables of architectural typology of each era to understand its evolution progress. The significant of this study is that it will reinforce historical and cultural importance of type concept, and also elevate pragmatic aspects of its notion as a solid and reliable design method.
