Traditionally, Wordsworth has been considered as a pantheist, at least in his early years. Most critics point out the fact that the poet was against the established church in his early life and conclude that he changed his religion from pantheism to Christianity between 1805 and 1850. The two versions, 1805 and 1850, of The Prelude seem to confirm the argument of the critics who usually compare the different ways of expressions appearing in each version. The biographical facts of the poet, however, reveal that it was the church of his society but not Christianity itself that he was against. Another problem of the critics is that they regard the changed expressions in the two different versions of The Prelude as the evidence of his conversion. It is true that Wordsworth uses more words with Christian tinge in the later version than in the earlier one. The later version was, however, for publication and thus he is apt to be more careful in using the terms that could cause some misunderstandings from the pious. In addition, what he says in his poems is supposed to be metaphorical. When Wordsworth says in his poem, “all beings are God,” we should not forget the possibility that he can use a figure of speech. We should not take what he says in poetry as a literal meaning.
