The national Korean police force is comprised of the headquarters of the national police agency, the central police organization, 14 provincial police agencies, 231 police stations, 2930 branch offices. Recently, community policing is the first major reform in policing. The goals of community policing are generally characterized as controlling crime, reducing the fear of crime, maintaining order, and the improving the quality of life in neighborhoods.
Under theses situations, many efforts are underway to accomplish a radical reorganization of the structure of police administration that will be more conducive to achieve the prevailing goal of community service.
Current innovations in police patrolling procedures reflect the movement away from crime-fighting and toward a sensitivity to the local community.
In these contexts, Korean national police agency started new patrol division system which combining 3-5 police boxes into one patrol division to increase efficiency and to perform positive community policing since 2003.
Th purpose of this study is to analyze the problems of patrol division system in rural areas, with the case of Andong city. This study is methodologically based on the literature review, and the survey research(using data from 246 living in Andong police station). As statistical analysis, mainly simple frequency analysis were conducted by using SPSS package.
Conclusionally, To solve the problem and obstacles of patrol division system and to realize the community policing in rural areas, the police agencies should come up with new policies fitting the patrol division system in rural areas.
