It has been common in the theorizing of the processes of neoliberal globalization to emphasize the role of information technologies as promoting a generalized acceleration of economy and society. The role of speed, moreover, has been viewed variously in either a positive or negative light. What has not been consistently theorized is what open-ended social acceleration means for the neoliberal project itself. This paper forwards the idea that through the technological obsession with promoting speed throughout economy and society, with the explicit and sole aim of accelerating what Marx called the ‘circuits of capital’, neoliberalism has set itself on a collision course with the future. Capitalism predicated as operating optimally at what Marx (and Bill Gates) called ‘the speed of thought’ is untenable if viewed through the prism of temporality. It is argued that neoliberal globalization now approaches a crossroads that require a reappraisal of nationally based thinking about the global economy and the promotion of a bigger role of government in creating the antithesis of neoliberalism, which is a social democratic globalization that exerts more democratic control over both economic processes and the application of information technologies.
