The flow pattern in pump station changes according to the suction sump configuration. And free-surface vortex occurring at the free surface above suction bell mouth and submerged vortex appearing from the bottom below the bell mouth are main sources of noise and vibration of the pumps installed at the pump station. Furthermore, these vortices are causing cavitation erosion at impellers, resulting in severe deterioration of the pump performance. The flow pattern of the approaching flow to sump, configuration condition around the pump intake bell mouth, free-surface water level, combined pump operation with its flowrate adjustment are important parameters to be considered in pump station design.
Standardization for the sump design and operation has been carried out in several countries such as CEN standard in Europe, HI standard in U.S.A and JSME and TSJ standard in Japan. In Korea, Kwater(Korea Water Resource Corporation) is one of governmental organization subsidies dealing with drinking water production and management. Large number of Kwater pump stations were constructed in past days according to the ad-hoc design criteria by design companies. Therefore, some pump stations have suffered from severe damages in pump impellers caused by vortex-induced cavitation or significant vibration problems.
The test included installation of multi-purpose model facilities covering, if possible, any kind of configuration and pump operation condition necessary to produce lot of data for the reliable vortex occurrence criteria. Experimentation techniques such as traditional visualization observation and quantitative field velocity measurement PIV were simultaneously adopted. Some flow analysis was performed to survey the vortex generation particularly in partitioned sump configuration (arriving and suction) characterizing the typical Kwater pump sumps.
