The ability to construct ordered two- and three-dimensional structures on the nanometer scale is essential for the development of next-generation optical, electronic, and magnetic materials and devices. The limitations of top-down approaches in providing nanoscale assembly have provided new bottom-up approaches. One method involves “bio-templated” assembly, whereby inorganic nanoparticles, for example, are assembled using a biomolecular scaffold.
Here, we report the assembly of semiconductor nanocrystals using microtubule (MT) fibers as the nanoscale scaffolds. More importantly, we characterize the assembly by observing optical signatures of the assembly process induced by Forster-type energy transfer (ET) between nanocrystal quantum dots (NQDs). Significantly, the power of this spectroscopic technique to reveal precisely the positions of nanoscale objects is not diminished in the biomolecular system, allowing in situ analysis in biologically relevant buffered solutions.
