This research is to clarify the architectonic characteristics of the Vietnamese wood structure by comparing the northern Vietnamese structure with that of the central and southern Vietnamese; the former formed its new tradition at least before 14th century through dealing with Chinese wood structure while the latter adopted many local techniques in the course of southward expansion of the Viet.
The northern Vietnamese architecture can be said to combine Chinese architectural tradition of the purlin-structure with Vietnamese own architectural tradition of the rafter-structure. In this process, Vietnamese wood structure invented the lever-like "Bay" that supported the eave. "Bay" had developed into rafter-like structural member "Ke" to enlarge the scale of building and the serial combination of "Ke"s finally completed peculiar style of wood structure.
On a while, the central and southern Vietnamese architecture developed the rafter-structure without any reference to the purlin-structure. The structure was composed of the stable truss in the center part of longitudinal section of a building, then the rafter "Keo" added continually in the both sides.
In conclusion the influence of the rafter-structure is considered as the most characteristic point in Vietnamese wood structure, and the two lever-like members "Ke" and "Keo" show the difference of the wood structures of the northern Vietnam and the central and southern Vietnam.
