Kim, Haeyeon, 1999. Referring Expressions for Speaker and Hearer in Korean Conversation. Discourse and Cognition 6.1, 73-100. The purpose of this paper is to explore the question of how referential choice for speaker and hearer (or first and second persons) is made in Korean conversation. To achieve this goal, first I examine in what reference forms speaker and hearer are referred. The examination of Korean conversational data shows that zero anaphora, overt pronouns, and full NPs are all used to refer to first and second persons in Korean. The choice between zero anaphora and overt forms are determined by the interaction between iconic motivation and economic motivation. Zero anaphora is an unmarked form in the sense that both speaker and hearer are involved in the same conversational floor and thus they are given, i.e., they are in the consciousness of each other's. Overt pronouns are used in the case when current speaker picks out next speaker, particularly in multi-party conversations among peer-groups. Full NPs are used in the case when the speaker has a lower status than the addressee's in the honorific system or when the speaker wishes to express his/her politeness or affection to the next speaker. Finally, this paper shows that the choice of referential options for first and second persons is determined by cognitive, socio-cultural, and discourse-structural factors in Korean conversation.
