Im, Kyu-Hong. (1996). A study of the Korean discourse marker ‘Inca’. Discourse and Cognition, 2, 1-20. This paper aims at analyzing discourse features and functions of the Korean discourse marker ‘Inca’, which is a discourse marker with a high frequency of occurrence in Korean language. The results of this paper can be summarized as follows: First, the definition and category of the Korean discourse marker are given. Second, the process is shown in which the discourse marker ‘Inca’ originally behaves as a weakened form derived from the temporal adverb ‘Ice’, which has lexical meanings of ‘contrast’ and ‘transition’, and finally functions as a transitional marker in the discourse. Third, some discourse properties of ‘Inca’ are examined in the context where it is used. Fourth, it is found that ‘Inca’ serves the complex discourse function in which the speaker takes hold of the prior narrative and connect it to the next narrative, and makes the hearer pay attention to the next new information and find time to recall the new information. Fifth, it is also shown that ‘Inca’ has a common property of drawing a new information from an old one. (Gyeongsang National University)
