This paper deals with time expressions in Korean to see how Korean speakers understand and express linguistically the course of time development in the Korean language. This paper shows that there are two major ways to express time in Korean. One is parallelism and the other is retrogression. Parallelism covers those time expressions in which humans move in the same direction with that of time which moves from past, present, to future. On the other hand, retrogression involves those time expressions in which time moves in the opposite direction to the way humans move in the world. That is, humans move from the past, the present, to the future but time moves backward from the future, present, to the past in retrogression. Parallelism has to do with our conception of the time based on the present time, the law of cause and effect, the natural life time; on the other hand, retrogression is based on our understanding of time viewed from the point of retrospection, anticipation, past or future time and it is taken to be a derivative one.
