When the Benedictines came to Korea on 25th February 1909, they became the first male religious order in the country. Their missionary work evolved around four Abbeys: the monasteries in Seoul(1909 - 1927), Tokwon(1927 - 1949), Yenki(1922 - 1946) and Waegwan (1952 till now). The monastery in Waegwan which was established in 1952 became an Abbey in 1004. To this day the Abbey is located in Waegwan.
The purpose of this paper is to show forth the method and the special characteristics of the missionary work done by the Benedictines during the first 40 years with the monasteries in Seoul, Tokwon and Yenki as the centers. In doing so I do not wish to portray the Benedictines as a missionary organization; rather I wish to see them as a religious order and to find out the originality of their missionary method. In this sense I wish to present three important arguments.
Firstly, I research the founding history of the Monastery St. Ottilien and the Congregation of St. Ottilien. At the same time I take into consideration the missionary thinking of the founder, Fr. Andreas Amrhein, and of the first abbot of St. Ottilien, Fr. Norbert Weber, who was the highest superior at the time when the Benedictines came to Korea.
Secondly, it is important why the Missionary Benedictines came to Korea. Here one has to consider synthetically the social and political situation of Korea, the internal situation of the Church and the circumstances of the Congregation of St. Ottilien at that time. Clarifying the original motive for coming to Korea is of great importance when searching for the special characteristics of the Mission in Korea by the Missionary Benedictines.
Thirdly, there is the analysis of the method and characteristics of their missionary work The Benedictines did their missionary work during the first 40 years with religious life, educational engagement and liturgical work at the center. Here the special characteristics of the Benedictine missionary method become manifest.
