A long range transferred Asian dust that is one of special cases of the transferred aerosol from a continent to Korea. Especially, a bad episode of the transferred polluted gases has been a recent frequent occurrence in Korea, mostly moving from China to Korea. We were monitoring the aerosol and polluted gases for analyzing these phenomena. GIST (Gwoangju Institute of Science and Technology) and KGAWO (Korea Global Atmosphere Watch Observatory) LIDAR systems, operated at Anmyeon-do in the west coast area of Korea, were used for researching on vertical aerosol distribution of the transferred aerosol in this study. MPL (Micro Pulse LIDAR) and MWL (Multi Wavelength LIDAR) were run by both the KGAWO and GIST, respectively. The wavelengths of MPL and MWL were 523.5 and 532 ㎚. In a comparison of the results from MPL and MWL, we found that the observed vertical aerosol distributions of two LIDAR systems have good correlation. MWL is especially useful for observing a depolarization ratio to detect aerosol in the atmosphere because the ratio gives us information about the aerosol even though it is included in a cloud. That is, MWL can detect a solid type of aerosol in the atmosphere. To more clearly understand the transferred aerosol and polluted gases, the observed results of the radio sonde for each case were compared with those of the LIDAR systems and air quality monitoring instruments such as nephelometer, sulfur dioxide analyzer and aethalometer. For example, when the polluted gases and aerosol were transferred to our site from China and the thermal subsidence inversion was occurred simultaneously, the observed SO2 and CO concentrations by the instruments in the polluted days increased four and seventeen times more than those in the none polluted days, respectively. In optical property of aerosol, aerosol scattering coefficients for three wavelengths (450, 500 and 700 ㎚) in the polluted days were ten times more than those in the none polluted days. The result of the aerosol size distribution showed that fine particles were increased in the polluted days. Those results clearly showed the bad episode in rural area could be induced to effects of the weather condition and long range transferred air pollutants.
