Optical characteristics of fog which occurred near the Incheon International Airport (37.47 N, 126.43 E) within the period from January 2003 to December 2004 were analyzed, using satellite data of the MODIS onboard the AQUA/TERRA and a radiative transfer model (the SBDART). The difference in brightness temperature between 3.7 ㎛ and 11 ㎛ (T3.7-11) and the reflectance at 0.65 ㎛ (R0.65), used for threshold values of remotely sensing fog, were derived from the MODIS. The T3.7-11 threshold values were significantly affected by the higher clouds above the fog layer during nighttime since the difference between fog and clear-sky was small. Also, the R0.65 during daylight depended heavily on the solar zenith angle. Thus, in order to improve the fog algorithm from satellite data, the effects of both the clouds on T3.7-11 and the angle on R0.65 were proposed to be reduced with the look-up table and the angular normalization, respectively. The sensitivity experiments of the two thresholds as a function of the height, optical thickness, effective radius and phase of fog particles were performed, based on numerical simulation. The effect of the clouds on the infrared threshold was sensitive under the condition of both the Cloud Optical Thickness, COT ≤ 16 and the effective radius Re ≤ 8 ㎛. A distinction between fog and stratus, and the effect of the clouds and solar zenith angle on the threshold were discussed.
