Intensive observation of airborne particles (TSP and PM₁?) was conducted in Seoul during the springtime of 2003 in order to investigate the physical and chemical properties. The samplings of TSP and PM₁? were made using High Volume Air Sampler (HVAS), and measurements have been carried out every day for 9 hours (9:00a.m.~6:00p.m.). In addition, pollens were collected by passive sampler (SIGMA2) every Friday. The mean mass concentrations of TSP and PM₁? in the springtime of 2003 were 116.4 ± 60.6 ㎍/㎥ and 67.5 ± 36.1 ㎍/㎥, respectively. The maximum concentration of TSP was 335.5 ㎍/㎥ of 27 March during an Asian dust event, and that of PM₁? was 176.42 ㎍/㎥ of 22 May in a haze event. The fraction of PM₁? to TSP was 0.59 (0.18~0.93) in Seoul. The metallic elements from natural sources in PM₁?, that is Al, Ca, Fe, Na, Mg and Mn showed mean concentrations of 2.1, 1.6, 0.8, 0.6, 0.4, and 0.06 ㎍/㎥, respectively. The metallic elements from anthropogenic sources, Zn, Pb, Cu, Cr, Ni, Cd and Co showed mean concentrations of 236.4, 134.2, 74.4, 16, 6.3, 3.4, and 1.2 ng/㎥, respectively. The mean contribution ratio of soil for 21 samples was 28.7%. Also the contribution ratio of soil was 58.7% during the Asian dust events and 21.5% during the haze events. The pollen number concentrations of March, April, and May were 200.5 #/㎥, 329.5 #/㎥, and 473 #/㎥, respectively.
