The drought of 1982 that is one of the most severe drought in East Asia started over the southern part of Japan in March. It extended to west and northwest, reached to Manjuria on June, and showed maximum range on July, and weakened gradually after August. Related atmospheric circulations shown three characteristics. Firstly, the meridional inflow of the moisture flux to East Asia was reduced because of weakening the Western-North Pacific high in June. Secondly, due to the blocking phenomena occurred twice over the Sea of Okhotsk, the cold advection strengthened at middle level over East Asia, the air temperature went down and the moisture became insufficient throughout whole troposphere. Thirdly, the core of upper level jet prevailed over the western part of East Asia land through all period and supposed to cause the downward flow in East Asia. This situation persisted until July and recovered to normal at August. Then the summer rainy period that was associated with summer monsoon in this area could not be active and passed away with the lack of precipitation.
