To investigate the effect bear bile on cholesterol metabolism, 24 male Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats weighing 120-140 g each (5 weeks old) were divided into 4 groups and subjected to one of the following treatments. Group A (negative control group) received basal diets; Group B (positive control group) received additionally 1% cholesterol and 0.25% sodium cholate; Group C and D received same diets as Group B but additionally supplemented 100 mg/kg and 500 mg/kg bear bile orally for 6 weeks, respectively. Total cholesterol and triglyceride levels in serum were decreased significantly in 100 mg/kg- and 500 mg/kg-bear bile treated groups in which fed 1% cholesterol and 0.25% sodium cholate in the diets. Serum LDL-cholesterol level was also decreased significantly in 100 mg/kg- and 500 mg/kg-bear bile treated groups in which fed 1% cholesterol and 0.25% of sodium cholate in the diets. Serum MDA level was lower in bear bile treated groups than high-cholesterol diets group. In addition, HDL-cholesterol was significantly increased in 100 mg/kg- and 500 mg/kg-bear bile treated groups. Thus, these results suggest that bear bile may contribute a significant increase in the HDL-cholesterol/total cholesterol ratio and a reduction of arteriosclerotic index.
