Myogenesis is one of critical developmental process in mammals. Whole body muscles are derived from the embryonic somites except some parts of head muscles. Two kinds of genes are affecting to embryonic myogenesis, which is the genes related patterning formation of myotomes and muscle specific transcription regulating genes. Among them, Dmrt2 which affects myotomal patterning formation, and Pax3 which regulates myogenic specific transcription, doubly mutants tested using the myogenin gene expression pattern in mice embryos. Myogenin gene expression pattern was severely malformed in doubly homozygous mutant and showed very low expression levels of myogenin. However even though doubly mutation was occurred, myogenin expressing cells were not completely abolished in myotomes at around embryonic day (E) 10.5. Every possible compounding genotype between two genes was examined and discussed about the function of each gene. These experiments would be helpful to understand myogenesis process in mammals, which is closely linked to muscle regeneration program after muscle injury in adult mammals.
