The pig is a monogastric and omnivorous animal. Because of the similarity in gastrointestinal morphology and physiology, the pig is a good model for the study of gastrointestinal issues in the human. This is a description of the contrast radiologic appearance of the normal gastrointestinal tract of pigs. Fluoroscopic and radiographic observations of swallowing movement, gastric, and intestinal motilities were made in 5 mature miniature pigs after being eaten 2% barium soup. Barium given by per os rapidly gone through mouth, pharynx, and esophagus like human's swallowing movement, and entered stomach. In the stomach, peristaltic waves (Type 2) moved towards the pyloric antrum, which became circular as it filled with digesta. And then, terminal antral contraction occurred, the antrum decreased in diameter and digesta moved to the duodenum or the body of the stomach. Emptying of the barium from stomach occurred at 8.9 (7~14) hours, and the barium entered the large intestine at 4.3 (2.5-8) hours. But, these transit times would be variable according to the type of the food, so the reported transit time should be considered as guidelines for a liquid diet. From this study, it was confirmed that swallowing movement and gastric motility of the mature miniature pig were similar to human's. Therefore we could conclude the miniature pig would be a good model for the gastrointestinal issues in the human.
