Open osteotomy models of animal are used to study fracture healing. Generally, It was considerd that complications such as infections and disturbed fracture healing in open fracture models. The purpose of this study was to develop a standardized open tibial fracture model in the rat with good reproducibility minimized disturbing the surrounding soft tissues not using any device or plier. All fractures were in the middle third of the tibia in this study and wound problems in osteotomized tibia site not occurred. Callus formation, fibroblasts and cartilage cells, angulation, consolidation of the fractured tibia were distinctly macroscopically and histologically observed with time dependent manner to 8 weeks. These results indicate that tibia osteotomy model in rat represents normal fracture healing processes without damages of peri-osseous soft tissues, vasculature and musculature. There was no significant difference the changes of body weights and serum Ca??, P, and ALP values in tibia osteotomized rats. In osteotomy fracture rat model, complications such as infections and disturbed fracture healing were not found, and the importance of the intramedullary nailing in stabilizing an osteomized rat tibia has confirmed. Our rat tibia osteotomy model will be suitable animal model for research of basic fracture healing processes as well as for the evaluation of intramedullary fixation devices.
