The purpose of the present study is to discuss the existence of the critical period which is still a controversial issue in the second language acquisition (SLA) research, and to find factors that might have an effect on apparent child-adult performance differences in L2 pronunciation including the age factor. Based on the review of empirical studies in the SLA field, the critical period regarding L2 pronunciation might be existed although the results of some studies are inconsistent with the expectations generated by the critical period hypothesis (CPH). But it is very difficult to say that the single variable, that is, maturational age, can explain the apparent child-adult L2 pronunciation disparities. This study suggests that some factors, such as sufficient L2 input, high motivation and affective factors, and phonetic approximation, might also affect the comparisons of child versus adult L2 speech and the success or failure of achieving native-like pronunciation.
