Recent studies on the electronic mailing (E-mail) focused on largely its technological aspects and tried to identify the unique needs and functions served by this new medium in comparison with other inter¬personal communication situations such as face-to-face communica¬tion, terrestrial and cellular telephony, letter writing, facsimile trans¬mission, etc.
Major functions attributed to E-mail includes non-simultaneity of addressing, flexible retrieval and reuse of message content, etc. Based on these technical superiorities, many studies predicted that E-mail would supercede existing interpersonal media in satisfying these functions. But there is no empirical study that examines the functional interrelationships among these five media and face-to-face communication.
We do not know how the users of these interpersonal media perceive the comparative effectiveness of E-mail in satisfying various private communication needs. The answer to this question is im¬portant in our speculation about whether, or, how fast, this new me¬dium would substitute other traditional interpersonal media.
Data for this study come from a purposive sample of 164 university students, who would represent a segment that recorded the unprece¬dented growth in adopting the new media such as E-mail and mobile phone. Based on existing studies of media uses and gratifications, we identified 15 major needs/functions that are frequently served by in¬terpersonal private communication media. Employing multidimensional scaling technique, we factored out two major dimensions (Convenience, Media Richness) from these needs.
The five media and the face-to-face communication situation were plotted in the two dimensional space to evaluate their hierarchical ordering in perceived effectiveness in satisfying the interpersonal com¬munication needs. Additionally, t-tests were performed to compare E-Mail with the other private communication channels. Based on these two statistical tests, this study attempts to identify the media that could possibly be substituted by E-Mail, the media that are functionally equivalent or exceeded by E-Mail, and the differentiated functions that are uniquely satisfied by E-Mail.
