This paper approaches Conrad’s An Outcast of the Islands from the postcolonial feminist standpoint, and tries to investigate the sexual relations between the white man and the native women in the 19th century colonial Borneo. The examination of the gender dynamics of the novel reveals the representation of the native women as stereotypes, Joanna as a slave and Aissa as a femme fatale. The stereotypes stem from the traditional view and discourse of the Western Orientalist who gazes upon the veiled Eastern woman with desire and fantasy, feminizing the East for Western power and possession. Nevertheless, the novel shows a strong resistance of the native against the ruling Western through Babalatch and Aissa. But Aissa’s resistance has a limitation in that she is actually depicted as a victim of the sexual desire of the imperialistic Western white man, as well as a political victim of patriarchal male leaders of the colony. Hence the double colonization of Aissa, the native woman.
